About Grande Prairie – Canadian School of Hydrocarbon Measurement (CsHm)
A group was formed in Grande Prairie called the Industry Measurement Group (IMG). The group was formed to work in conjunction with the Calgary IMG to help ensure measurement issues discussed in Calgary meetings were getting out to the field locations. Two Grande Prairie members would attend the Calgary meetings and bring back minutes for topics of discussion at local meetings.
One of the things the Calgary group had initiated was the Canadian School of Hydrocarbon Measurement (CsHm). At this school, experts in the field of measurement put on sessions about new and existing technologies, and regulatory requirements. This was a two day school that was well accepted and very successful.
For many Peace Country employees, it was hard to justify attending a school so far away. There was the cost of transportation, accommodation and other expenses, not to mention missing two days of work. One of the topics of discussion at the GP IMG meetings was how we were missing out on things that could contribute to us better managing our measurement business. We decided as a group that we would attempt to hold a GP Canadian School of Hydrocarbon Measurement. As the school in Calgary was held in April, we decided to hold ours in October, so that it wouldn’t conflict with their time frame.
The first year it was held in Grande Prairie was 2004. We invited presenters to give sessions and exhibitors were invited to display their products. The school was such a success that we made a profit. We therefore decided to make this a yearly event.
The school has grown from just 2 streams, 12 exhibitors and 162 participants to 5 streams, 35 exhibitors and over 250 participants. The school has also worked hard towards fabricating a full sized separator package to be used for demonstration and lecture purposes.
The school continues to grow and make a profit which allows us to make many donations to deserving non-profit organizations in the communities where we live and work.
